WHAT IS TIJUANA VERDE?

The Tijuana Innovadora Movement is consolidating and bringing forth the Green Tijuana “Sphere of Influence.” This initiative aims to improve environmental quality and promote sustainable development through various programs and activities. Companies, NGOs, industries, and government participate in conferences, workshops, fairs, lectures, and reforestation to analyze, reflect on, and act in favor of the region’s environmental health.

Tijuana Verde focuses on studying and addressing the binational problem of environmental pollution in the rural and urban areas of Tijuana-San Diego. The leading causes of pollution are the increase in vehicular traffic, pollution of the Tijuana River Basin (CRT), which extends on both sides of the international boundary between Mexico and the United States, and the lack of planning for preventive environmental programs. Additionally, there needs to be more follow-up of those focused on the culture of caring for the fauna and flora, which is deteriorating the region’s ecosystem.

WHAT IS OUR GOAL?

To create a bi-national movement for environmental improvement through citizen expression and ongoing action.

NUMBERS

  • Teach people how to conserve natural resources and use them correctly.
  • To actively monitor the conditions of the Tijuana River.

OUR PROGRAMS

Tijuana Verde has five active programs that address climate change, water scarcity, and environmental education.

GREEN ÁGORA

It consists of an expression integrated by forums, meetings, conferences, and mapping of non-profits and groups dedicated to conserving the environment and natural resources.

ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENTAL FAIR

The project involves high school and university students planning projects to solve environmental problems and improve the quality of life of the region’s inhabitants. Through a call for proposals, all students from schools in the region are invited to participate in offering projects related to solving environmental problems. The areas included are water, air, energy, solid waste, and green infrastructure.

GREEN INTERVENTIONS

Refer to the restoration or planting of public areas that have been selected with the participation of the community. The type of vegetation used is chosen based on what is native to the area and what the soil needs for improvement. The community that participates in these projects is also trained in tree conservation to ensure the longevity of the trees.

GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Tijuana Innovadora and Tijuana Verde decided to give a green area to the city. This project was called “El Jardín del Recuerdo” and consists of a rehabilitated space with a sculpture garden in an area adopted by Tijuana Innovadora and AMUR- “Ambiente Urbano,” with the support of the Tijuana City Hall, located in front of the Hospital General Regional 1 of the IMSS, in which more than a thousand specimens of flora have been planted, including trees and shrubs, in addition to considering it a point of contemplation to honor those who succumbed to Covid-19.

TIJUANA RIVER INITIATIVE

The conservation and restoration of aquatic bodies of water are indispensable for our region. Tijuana has a limited amount of water for human consumption, which makes it of utmost importance to create awareness and take action to clean up the existing ones. The Tijuana River Initiative was created to articulate efforts to revitalize the Tijuana River and improve the quality of life of the binational community, working hand in hand with experienced allies on both sides of the border.
